The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
